It is interesting how closely connected we all are in this thing called life. On Friday, Jay got into an accident on the way home from work. There was a police standoff situation a few blocks from our neighborhood, and traffic was very backed up. I texted him and told him about the situation and suggested he take an alternate route. On the way home the alternate way, he was rear-ended by a driver, which pushed him into the guard rail as well as the driver in front of him. Thankfully, he was not badly hurt (though the car was totaled).
After he arrived home safely and our collective adrenaline settled back down, I sat quietly to reflect on how our actions (both good and bad) can have such a profound effect on others. If that person had not gotten involved in that police standoff which caused motorists to take alternate routes and backed up traffic all over, Jay would not have found himself on that road in that location at that particular moment in time to get hit. This just reinforces for me how important it is to spread good will all around whenever we can. If our actions and choices can so powerfully affect others, shouldn’t it be for the better?
Also, when the insurance adjuster was here this morning to look at the car, he was apologizing to us about the fact that Jay had an accident and he was sure that this was not what we had in mind, and what a hassle this is going to be. We both were shrugging it off and I said to the man that having Jay’s car totaled is a whole lot better than having his life ended in a fatal car accident. Anything less is nothing to fret over really, is it? When we put it into the proper perspective, we realize how insignificant this event really is. He is healthy and uninjured and we are not going to be impacted seriously financially from the accident. The rest is just details. Imagine if we all looked at challenges, struggles and nuisances like that…
